Terrific. Thoroughly enjoyed. You're living proof of Oscar's declaration, "“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

Now I am thinking about the parallels between cheese-making and novel-writing. Both such inefficient, time-consuming, bizarre, but delightful human activities! And both use limited ingredients (dairy, the alphabet) to dizzying variety. AND also, when the cheese and/or book is a perfect expression of what it should be, it's someone else other than the creator who gets to enjoy the pure pleasure of gobbling it up.

There are SO MANY parallels. Someone should write a post about it...

I’m so excited to open my sealed Discworld 2026 calendar *tomorrow*. Not today, December 31st. Tomorrow! It’s my own personal Hogfather Eve and I’m living for it! 🤩🥰

I love ALL of this, and I am so happy that the book resonated with your Jane Austen ventures -- I felt like it would! And a strange aside: this year, I, too, want to learn French. Not out of my own personal joy, but because my nine-year-old son has suddenly, without a clear indication why, become obsessed with learning the language. He requested French books for Christmas; he would play Duolingo for hours. He wants me to find him a tutor. And, crucially, he has begged that I learn, too. So, that's on my list for the New Year, as well. So that I can find joy in his delight, too.

Swervedriver! I knew we had something besides literature in common.
